What's the Deal With Eye Cream?

Disclaimer: This is totally girly stuff. Totally shallow, girly, girly stuff. Consider yourself warned.

Last month during a consultation with a client I asked her about her eye care routine. She explained she didn't use any products for her eyes and didn't see them as necessary. I was surprised that no one had told her of it's importance.

So, now I feel it my duty to tell all my readers about eye care. Yep. All 2 of you. You ready?

Is eye cream necessary?
Yes. Simply yes.

Think of it this way: The skin around the eye is far more delicate than the skin on the face. It is literally thinner. This is why it ages far more quickly. This is why we start to notice wrinkles there first.

As a visual, think of the facial skin, cheeks for example, as 20 sheets of paper. The skin around the eyes would then be about 3 or 4 sheets. It may not be an exact ratio, but you get the point.

It is different skin.

So therefore, it needs to be treated differently. Treated more delicately. With stuff especially for eyes. You wouldn't put hand cream on your face, right? Than why put face cream on the eyes?

Most eye creams come with a promise of fixing a particular concern. There are creams for puffiness, darkness, lines and wrinkles, and loss of firmness.

Find what is right for you. And use it every day and every night.

How To Apply?
Sometimes even more importantly than the chemical content of your eye cream is the placement of the product.

I have often had clients express disdain for their under eye puffiness. After asking a series of questions, I have found the reason for their condition is not because of genetics or other typical causes, lack of sleep, salty foods, whatever, but rather where they had been applying their eye cream.

They didn't genuinely have puffy eyes, they had irritation or reaction to the product itself. They had been placing it directly on the lid or too closely to the rim of the eye.

Application is simple.

Find your orbital bone. It encircles your eye socket. This is your guide as to how closely you are allowed to get to your eye when applying the cream.

For daytime use apply with your ring finger to three spots along the orbital bone beginning from the outer corner in. Why the ring finger, you ask: It has the least amount of mobility and therefore will not pull unnecessarily on the skin. Gently "pat" the product into the skin.

For night application place 2 additional dabs above the eye. Avoid patting directly on the lid of the eye. And tada! You will have beautifully hydrated eyes.

Consider yourselves told. My job is done.
